An Overview of SESAR

The System for Earth Sample Registration, SESAR, operates a web-based registry for samples and related sampling features from our natural environment that catalogs and preserves sample metadata profiles, distributes the International Geo Sample Number (IGSN), and provides access to the sample catalog via the SESAR Catalog Search.

SESAR’s objective is to overcome the problem of ambiguous naming of samples in the Geosciences that has limited the ability to share, link, and integrate sample-based data.

SESAR is a project of the EarthChem Program and part of IEDA (Interdisciplinary Earth Data Alliance), a national data facility funded by the US National Science Foundation.
